Google breaks with Apple on HTML software

Chromium, the open source non-profit that makes the software for Google’s Chrome browser, said today that it’s building a more compact HTML rendering system, called Blink. Blink will be based on WebKit, the HTML system that’s currently shared by Apple, Opera, Google Chrome and Google Android’s default browser, among others. To get started, the Chromium team says it’s going to rip 4.5 million lines of code out of WebKit “right off the bat.” Long term, the team is shooting for a “healthier codebase” that’s more stable than WebKit with “fewer bugs.”
