Mobile web 30% faster than last year

by Curtis Lee Fulton

Google Analytics says the mobile web is 30% faster today than it was a year ago. Desktop website performance has nudged up a little bit, despite the fact that desktop website payloads have more than doubled since this time last year. Google figures technology is mostly responsible for the boost:

Web browsers have gotten faster; there have been quite a few LTE/4G deployments making mobile networks a lot faster; and processing power on mobile devices continues to increase at a rapid pace.

That’s probably half the story. Two years ago Google started to put the squeeze on slow web sites by punishing them with lower search rankings. So it’s possible that pokey websites either got their act together or dropped out of the web – leaving a faster web for everyone else.
