Apple kicks over Newstand, brings background downloads to plain apps

Apple says normal apps can now download content in the background with its release of iOS 7 today. Before iOS 7, background downloading only worked for special “Newstand” apps that were geared for digital publishing. However,  Newstand apps are corralled into a Newstand pen that requires users to tap twice to open any app, reportedly annoying both consumers and publishers.
