Wikipedia editing goes mobile

by Curtis Lee Fulton

The Wikimedia Foundation, backers of Wikipedia, say they’ve released a mobile editing tool for Wikipedia pages. Over 15% of Wikipedia contributors are mobile and the trend is growing says the foundation, making the mobile editing tool critical.

Wikimedia says it needed a mobile tool that provided a “fast, intuitive editing experience for new users and experienced editors alike.” In June the foundation released a desktop WYSIWYG editor called VisualEditor. However, the new mobile tool is not WYSIWYG and uses markup codes to alter styles. Wikimedia says they wanted a simple mobile editor “for now” so they could observe their users’ “needs and expectations.”
