Jeffrey Bezos buys Washington Post for $250M

The Washington Post says it’s been bought by Amazon CEO and founder Jeffrey Bezos for $250 million. The Post made it clear that the new owner is an “entity that belongs to Mr. Bezos in his individual capacity and is not Amazon.com, Inc.”

The Post’s other online properties, including Slate magazineTheRoot.com and Foreign Policy were not part of the transaction.

Bezos said that the “Post’s values will not change” as a result of the buyout.

Al Jazeera launches predictive analytics for news

Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera English says it’s launched a predictive analytics platform for news on the web, in partnership with Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI). The platform, called FAST (Forecast and Analytics of Social Media and Traffic), measures audience interest in topics by scanning news stories on the web and social media.

Imad Musa, the online head for Al Jazeera English, says the broadcaster will use the tool to “understand the consumption of news and what is expected to do well in driving traffic.”

Twitter use doubles as 72% US adult Internet users move to social media

A new study by the Pew Research Center finds that 72% US adult Internet users now use social networking sites, up from 67% last year. Twitter use for the same group has grown to 18%, up from 8% in November 2010.
